DIRECTOR'S NOTES

The setting for Jim Rasheed’s darkly comic skewering of the accounting industry happens to be a national accounting firm’s Charleston office. But the heart of Jim’s play resides in the everyday human urges and win-at-all-costs impulses of American life. The characters of Professional Skepticism are subjected to the same daily pressures that all of us face - deadlines, advancement, and workplace politics - but the choices that they make to cope with these pressures drive this contemporary revenge fable.

Professional Skepticism’s central character is no folk hero whistle-blower who exposes corporate malfeasance in the name of integrity. Rather, his carefully-constructed plan of corporate payback employs its own deceptions as it exposes cronyism and levels careers. Does his use of ethical practices redeem his motives? Can we be entirely comfortable when integrity becomes a bludgeon? The deeper professional skepticism upon which the play turns would serve us well in a world in which truth packaged for a purpose is an increasingly popular weapon.
